Instagram Passes Twitter

Instagram Tops Twittter With Over 300M Users

Instagram passes Twitter with over 300 million users with Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram making the following announcement last week:

“We’re proud to announce that there are now more than 300 million Instagrammers. Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community that shares more than 70 million photos and videos each day. Instagram is home to creativity in all of its forms, a place where you can find everything from images of the Nile River to the newest look from Herschel Supply or a peek inside the mind of Taylor Swift.

This would make Instagram the 2nd largest social network with Facebook being the largest at over 1.3 billion! With growth steady, Instagram is now looking to strengthen its authenticity and trust among its users. Soon it plans to launch verified badges for celebrities, brands, and athletes so people don’t accidentally follow parody, tribute, or look-alike accounts. This has become a major problem with the social network’s fake accounts in mass numbers, something the company wants to deal with over the next few months. Twitter and Facebook already have programs for verifying profiles. Instagram’s 100 million increase in active users in the last nine months is equivalent to an active user base growth of about 50 percent, compared with Twitter which, in the same period, added only about 38 million new and active users.

It will be interesting to see how this battle heats up with Instagram and Twitter. Do you think that Twitter shoud be worried with the recent Instagram growth? What is your favorite of the these two social networks?
