We are all dropping our phones quite often and we get worried that the phone will get scratched or dented. It’s not just being worried; we are actually worried because these things happen. Our phone drops on the floor and the HD high-pixelated display cracks or breaks, or the phone gets dented on its corners and edges, but Honda’s new case might just get rid of that. It’s dubbed Case N.

Honda has developed a device with built-in airbags borrowing from the case above as an inspiration. This device, case N, deploys six airbags immediately the phone is dropped. It acts like a protective shell. And it fits any smartphone.

Now, I know that we probably have phone cases. I am not a fan of phone cases, and I like having my phone naked, if I can say that. But bottom line is I hate that sinking feeling when my phone falls down and I find that it is dented, scratched or even crashed and totally destroyed. The phone cases in the market today are quite a good measure in trying to hold things together for us all.  But the Case N is just a newer version on another level. It’s nothing like the rest.

On the other hand, the Case N is just a concept. Too bad?? I know. Honda doesn’t have any plans to get this product manufactured and released into the market. But reports indicate that Apple do.

In March, reports came out that Apple had gotten a patent for a case that tracked how close a phone was to hitting the ground using its accelerometers. I can strongly suggest that this was related to Honda’s concept, even though it’s just a concept. Honda and Apple working together here? I don’t know. It would be surprising and possible but very unlikely.

From the video, a  Honda employee starts to think about the phone case when he realizes that his display is cracked, and goes on to find various ideas for developing a case that would not only prevent his phone from cracking when it hits the floor but also when hits the floor from the top of a building. He eventually comes up with the idea of Case N. The airbags are gas-powered and they fire in the opposite direction to prevent the phone from touching the ground.

Honda's Case N engineer testing

He tests various prototypes and in the final version, shows the phone dropping and built-in airbags deploy after the phone is dropped. The video also shows the airbags deploying in case the phone is stolen from your pocket, better said as pocket picking, and that happens fast, triggering the airbags which actually alert you to the stealing event.

Case N final version

Since the concept is Honda’s but a similar design was highly suggested by smartphone giant Apple, we are expecting that Apple might carry on with the concept, or Honda just pick off right where they left to finish what they started.

Don’t forget to leave a comment in the section below. What do you think? Will this invention ever see the light of day?
